About John Henry Newman
The Venerable John Henry Cardinal Newman (1801 - 1890) was an English convert to Catholicism, later made a cardinal. In early life he was a major figure in the Oxford Movement to bring the Church of England back to its Catholic roots. Eventually his studies in history convinced him to become a Catholic. Both before and after his conversion he wrote a number of influential books, including Via Media, Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, Apologia Pro Vita Sua, and the Grammar of Assent.
In 1991, Cardinal Newman was declared by Pope John Paul II to be "Venerable" that is, worthy of reverence, in recognition of his having practiced the virtues of holiness to a heroic degree.
